Welcome Note

There’s something extraordinary about working with young people aged 16 to 19. It’s a time of growth, possibility, and bold decisions—and at The Learn Academy (TLA), we’re here for all of it.
As Head Teacher, it’s a privilege to lead the only British school in Barcelona designed entirely around this pivotal stage. Everything we do—our curriculum, our culture, our care—is tailored to support students in the final and most important phase of their school journey.
We offer the International A Levels, respected globally for its academic rigour and flexibility. Learners shape a path that reflects their strengths and ambitions—whether in sciences, creative subjects, or a unique combination of both.
With small class sizes and a team of passionate educators, we create a learning environment where each student is known, challenged, and supported. Our teachers are mentors as much as subject specialists, guiding learners to grow in confidence, independence, and resilience.
At TLA, we measure success not only by exam results, but by the kind of people our students become: curious, capable, and ready to thrive in a global, complex, and changing world. Whether their next step is a top university, a creative path, or something still unfolding, we help them get there with purpose and confidence.
Thank you for your interest in our school. We encourage you to explore what makes TLA unique, and whether it’s the right fit for your family.

School Ethos

Ethos & Methodology
At The Learn Academy, students aged 16 to 19 receive a high-quality, internationally recognised education tailored to a wide range of futures. Grounded in the British A Level curriculum, our approach balances academic rigour with individual guidance, helping each student progress at a pace and along a path that reflects their strengths and goals.
We are a welcoming international school with a strong sense of community. Students are encouraged to think independently, pursue their interests, and build the academic and personal skills needed for university, careers, and life beyond school. Whether aiming for a top global university, a creative pathway, or still exploring their next steps, every student is valued, supported, and known.

Our Mission & Vision
Our mission is to champion academic excellence, personal development, and cultural competence in an inclusive and respectful environment. We empower students to think critically, act responsibly, and engage with the world around them.
Our vision is to be Europe’s leading innovative pre-university college—developing ambitious, independent learners who are prepared to meet the demands of higher education and contribute meaningfully to a global society.

A Flexible, Structured Academic Path
Students follow the Pearson Edexcel International A Level programme: a two-year qualification accepted by top universities worldwide. Learners select three to four subjects from the widest A Level offering in Barcelona. Each subject is taught in small classes by experienced, specialist teachers who foster deep understanding, academic discussion, and independent thinking.
Subjects include physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, history, English language and literature, business, economics, psychology, fine art, graphic communication, photography, Spanish, and information technology.

Language of Instruction & Support
English is the language of instruction for all subjects (except A Level Spanish) and is used for all communication with students and families. Our student body represents a wide range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds. While many languages are spoken socially, English remains our shared academic language. Targeted English language support is available for students who need it, ensuring everyone can fully access the curriculum and feel confident in school life.

Beyond the Classroom
Weekly form time focuses on study skills, personal development, and wellbeing, helping students build the habits and mindset needed for success in school and beyond.
Students may also choose to complete the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)—an optional independent research project on a topic of their choice. The EPQ helps students build skills in academic writing, time management, and critical thinking, and is highly regarded by universities.
Our Model United Nations (MUN) programme gives students the opportunity to attend conferences each year, strengthening their communication, diplomacy, and global perspective.
Through the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, students set personal goals in service, physical activity, and outdoor adventure—developing leadership, teamwork, and self-reliance.
In addition, student- and teacher-led clubs allow learners to explore creative, academic, and social interests—bringing energy and connection to daily school life.

University Preparation
We offer regular activities throughout the year to help students explore their options and make informed decisions—through guest speakers, university fairs, application workshops, and campus visits.
We’ve welcomed institutions such as King’s College London, ESADE, La Salle, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Glasgow, and leading art and design colleges from around the world. Students also attend international university fairs and visit campuses across Spain.
Personalised support is at the heart of our approach. From one-to-one guidance and mentoring to small group sessions, we help students present themselves confidently—whether applying to the UK, US, Europe or further afield.

We offer A Level Spanish as part of our academic programme for students aged 16 to 19.

Language support available

All subjects at The Learn Academy are taught in English, with the exception of A Level Spanish. Students are required to demonstrate a minimum of B2 English proficiency before entry, confirmed via an English placement test during the admissions process.

For students who need additional support once enrolled, we offer targeted English assistance through small group and one-to-one sessions. This ensures students can fully access the curriculum, build confidence, and make strong academic progress while studying in an English-medium environment.

Curriculum

The Learn Academy follows the British International A Level curriculum, delivered through the Pearson Edexcel exam board. This globally recognised programme is designed for students aged 16 to 19 and provides academic depth, flexibility, and strong preparation for university and life beyond school.

Students typically study three to four A Level subjects over two years, allowing them to specialise in areas aligned with their interests, strengths, and future goals. The A Level approach promotes independent learning, critical thinking, and subject mastery—skills that are highly valued by top universities around the world.

Qualifications

At The Learn Academy, students complete the International A Level programme, with official certification awarded by Pearson Edexcel — a leading UK exam board. These qualifications are widely recognised by top universities across the UK, Europe, the US, Canada, and beyond, making them a powerful pathway to global higher education.

Facilities

The Learn Academy is located in a bright, modern space in the city of Barcelona, specifically designed to support students aged 16 to 19. Our facilities include well-equipped classrooms, a science lab, and quiet areas for focused, independent study. The environment is intentionally mature and university-like—creating the ideal setting for pre-university learners.

We are based in a suburban neighbourhood that’s well connected and highly accessible. Many of our students walk, cycle, or take public transport, with buses and train stations nearby. The school sits next to a café, one block from Starbucks, and directly across from a shopping centre—making the area vibrant and convenient. A courtyard just outside our doors and a park behind the school offer students places to relax, meet friends, or study in the fresh air. It’s a location our students love and take full advantage of.

Student Support

What learning needs the school can support

To support all learners:

- Each subject teacher offers a weekly drop-in session for students to review concepts, ask questions, or get help with assignments.
- We provide English language support through small group and one-to-one sessions for students who need additional help.
- During exam periods, students benefit from booster revision sessions, and we do not follow a traditional study-leave model. Instead, students remain supported through ongoing academic check-ins and optional mindfulness sessions to help manage stress and promote wellbeing.

For high-achieving students, we offer:

- The opportunity to take up to five A Level subjects
- The option to sit certain exams early, where appropriate and academically justified
- Access to the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) for independent research and academic extension
- Enrichment through Model United Nations, university-style seminars, and student-led clubs
- Opportunities to take on leadership roles and mentor younger peers

We have entry requirements for Mathematics and the Sciences, as these subjects begin at a high academic level. This ensures students are set up for success and can keep pace throughout the course.

Our small class sizes and close teacher-student relationships mean that support is personalised and proactive, ensuring all students—whether they need extra help or greater challenge—are guided to reach their full potential.

What support staff are available

We have two in-house SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Coordinators) who are available for weekly meetings with students and parents. They work closely with teaching staff to monitor student progress and implement tailored strategies that support individual learning needs—whether academic, emotional, or organisational. Our SENCOs also collaborate with external psychologists when needed and handle all formal exam accommodation requests.
