Public Nursery Applications: Dates and Deadlines 2023

If you have a child aged between 4 months and 3 years old as of this September, you have the right to apply for a place at one of the many public nurseries, or escoles bressol, across Barcelona. These centres are generally very well thought of and are considered a good option for your child if you wish to incorporate them into the local system.

The application process for public nurseries works in a similar way to that of the schools’ application process in that priority criteria are assigned to applicants and a strict timeframe is followed. Below I outline the important dates for the 2023 -2024 application period.

12th April - 4th May 2023: Open Days

Each escola bressol offers one or more open days to enable families to get to know their facilities and projects. Mosts of these will need to be signed up for in advance, so you will need to contact the centres directly. To find out the dates for these open days, follow this link. For all the contacts details for the escoles bressol, follow this link.

3rd May 2023: the number of places available in the different centres is announced.

4th - 17th May 2023: application period.

Applications need to be submitted online although some exceptions to this can be made.

24th May 2023: the list of applications for each centre is published with each applicant’s initial priority points score (before they have been checked).

25th - 31st May 2023: period for objections.

If applicants notice an error in the points they have been assigned or any other mistakes, this is the period to make a complaint.

2nd June 2023: the lottery.

Each applicant is assigned a number that will help determine who gets the remaining places at a nursery if there are applicants with the same priority points score. On the 2nd of June a number will be drawn by the Generalitat and from this number applicants will be able to tell if they have a 'good' number (ie close to the tiebreak number) or 'bad' (far from the tiebreak number).

6th June 2023: the 'definitive' lists published.

Lists will be published by each centre with details of the applications received with their punctuation and tiebreak score.

14th June 2023: lists of admitted students published.

Lists will be published by each centre detailing who has been admitted and who is on the waiting list.

15th - 21st June 2023: The enrolment period. If families do not enrol during this period, they forfeit their place.

Important to note:

Whilst all children are guaranteed a place at a public school from aged 3 there are, however, a limited number of places available in the public nurseries. So, if you do intend to apply to a public nursery, it is a good idea to have a backup of private nursery options in case you are not successful.
